[P] Upgrade from Prestige v7 to v8

In October 2023, we released Prestige version 8, a major release that adds support for color scheme, a new feature introduced by Shopify earlier this year to the theme editor.

Color scheme adds clarity and flexibility to the theme experience by allowing theme-defined and merchant-defined color schemes, adding a visual preview that enables merchants to more easily and predictably update theme colors, and allowing merchants to implement these changes at the global, section, and block levels within the theme.

With color schemes, merchants can now have different colors per section, as well as add background gradients, instead of a solid background for even more flexibility.

You can see an example below of how color schemes can be used inside the theme editor:

Upgrade limitations

Bringing support to the color scheme featured required a rewrite of various internals of the theme. Unfortunately, automatically upgrading from version 7 to version 8 is impossible. Merchants who wish to upgrade will need to upgrade manually, either through the theme editor or by downloading the theme from the theme store, and review the upgrade before publishing it.

Is this upgrade optional?

As for any upgrade on Shopify, this upgrade is completely optional. If your store doesn't benefit from the added flexibility the color scheme brings, you can stay on your current version.

How to upgrade

If you are using version 7 and would like to upgrade to version 8, we recommend doing a manual upgrade (learn more about how to do a manual upgrade).

Shopify will install the new version as an unpublished theme when manually upgrading. You must review the unpublished theme, configure your color scheme, and test your store.

Once you have tested your store and confirmed everything is working, you can publish it. You should keep the old version for a few weeks to roll back if you forget a change.

Understanding color scheme

A color scheme is a group of colors for different elements, such as background, text color, or button colors. For instance, here are the colors that are part of a color scheme in Prestige:

Color scheme can then be assigned to one or multiple sections. Changing a color in the scheme will automatically apply to all sections or blocks using this color scheme.

When migrating to color scheme, the first thing to do is to configuring the default color scheme to match your existing appearance. To do that, open the theme editor, navigate to the settings and select Colors to customize your color schemes:

Prestige comes with 4 pre-defined color schemes, but you can, of course, create custom schemes.

Color scheme 4 uses a transparent background and is typically used for sections with an image overlay (such as a slideshow or image with text overlay). We recommend that you do not change the background of this specific color scheme.

To change the colors of a given section, navigate to the section and change the "Color scheme" setting:
